This piece was based on a Viking picture stone from Hablingo, Sweden. It was completed on hot press paper with gouache paints. The gold and silver gilding, however, are real metal leaf. I gilded with modern size because I have discovered that it works better on modern paper than period materials such as gum ammoniac or fish glue. This scroll was given to Stevan Ulfkellson in honor of his induction into the Order of the Gage, April 2009.

This piece is inspired by a capital in the Visconti Hours. It is completed on goat parchment with period pigments. I tempered my pigments with gum arabic and gilded the gold with garlic juice. This was by far the smoothest process I have experienced with period materials. It was completed in February 2009 and given to my mother for her birthday the following month.

This illumination was done in the style of Viking artwork. It is based on a carved doorway from the Opdal Church in Norway. Although the Vikings did not complete illuminations such as this, the design worked out perfectly for a scroll. The design was at first a challenge to duplicate, but then turned out to be a very enjoyable piece. It was completed for Hróðgeirr Ívarsson's Knighting ceremony at Bog Twelfth Night, January 2009.
